At PrimeHealthMD, we provide safe and effective weight loss treatment options to help you with your health and weight loss goals. It is imperative to us to only offer scientifically proven solutions to our patients, ensuring they get the results they deserve.
Some of these treatment paths may include prescription weight loss pills. Your personalized weight loss program may consist of one of the following prescriptions:
Stimulants: Phendimetrazine, Phentermine (Adipex)
Phentermine made its appearance in the 1960s and is very well studied. This medication is a stimulant that acts centrally. It tells the brain and the stomach that you are less hungry. Phendimetrazine is a similar stimulant, with a shorter half-life and therefore can be dosed several times per day. Both are FDA-approved for short-term weight loss.
Also known as Wellbutrin, has been shown to be more effective than a placebo in achieving weight loss at 8 weeks in overweight and obese women specifically. Bupropion also has proven benefits for obese patients with depressive symptoms.
Antidepressants, specifically SSRIs
If the underlying etiology for difficulty losing or maintaining a healthy weight is related to anxiety, depression, or other mood disorder, an SSRI may be recommended as a part of your treatment plan.
GLP-1s: Wegovy, Saxenda, and other GLP-1 agonists
GLP-1s mimic an anti-hunger hormone in the body. Wegovy is a weekly injection with a very small needle, but there are other medications in this class that can be taken orally. It primarily works by delaying gastric emptying time which helps you regain a normal pattern of eating. This medication is generally well-tolerated however the rate at which you increase dosage can affect how it is tolerated. At PrimeHealthMD we include compounded supplements to enhance tolerability. We also have programs designed to mitigate costs. It has not been studied well enough for women who are attempting pregnancy/nursing and this should be avoided.
Oral weight loss medication that helps keep blood sugar under control after a meal.
Contrave (A combination of Bupropion and Naltrexone)
Oral, sustained-release medication combination or an antidepressant and opioid antagonist that increases energy expenditure, reduces hunger, and mitigates cravings.
Qsymia (A combination of Phentermine and Topiramate extended-release)
A combination of appetite suppressant and seizure medication is indicated for chronic weight management in overweight and obese adults.
We understand that you may have concerns about prescription weight loss medications, so we take the time to speak with you about your options, including the benefits, risks, and other concerns.
